Kentwood wildlife control Tip of the Month:

IS IT SAFE TO HANDLE A WILD ANIMAL WITH BARE HANDS?
Are you wondering if it is safe to handle wild animals with bare hands? Well, the answer is NO. It is not advisable to touch a wild animal when you don’t have gloves on. Never touch a living animal with your bare hands, even if it is badly hurt. This is because the wild animal may perceive you as a threat, and suddenly bite or scratch you. Some animals are so vicious that their bites can penetrate even the strongest of hand gloves. If a wild animal bites or scratches your skin, you could be infected with deadly diseases like rabies. That is why you must be careful when handling wild animals.

There are so many reasons why you should not handle a wild animal with bare hands. Let’s take a look at some of the important ones:

You Could Get Badly Injured
Many wild animals possess sharp teeth and claws, both of which can rupture the skin. These body features help the wild animals in hunting and killing smaller animals, especially omnivores like opossums and raccoons. Opossums are known to play dead when confronted by predators. Raccoons on the other hand can be very violent, especially when food is involved. If you’re dropping morsels of food for raccoons and then stop, they’ll get upset and lunge at you in a bid to steal the food.

You May Contract a Deadly Disease
As stated earlier, many wild animals are carriers of life-threatening diseases. A good example is a raccoon. They can infect you with rabies, a type of disease characterized by abnormal behavior such as excitement, aggressiveness, and dementia, followed by paralysis and death.

The feces and urine of most wild animals contain dangerous bacteria, viruses, and parasites. For instance, the scat of a raccoon is made up of roundworm eggs, which can easily be transferred to you and members of your family, even pets too. If your dog comes in contact with raccoon scat, it can get infected with the roundworm parasite and then pass it on to everyone in the house. Since you have no knowledge of it, the parasite will most likely spread through your home very quickly.

You don’t necessarily need to touch a wild animal's feces or urine before you get infected; you can also contract the deadly diseases when you inhale their waste matter. A good example is bat guano. Homeowners usually clean up bat droppings with a dustpan and broom/brush. That is totally wrong and unsafe. Here’s why: When you sweep bat droppings, you send dust and tiny spores into the air. Bats are known to be carriers of the spores that cause histoplasmosis. So if you inhale the spores in the bat guano, you can contract this deadly disease. Even if the bats are no longer present in your home, you still stand a risk of getting infected.

You May Be Attacked by Vicious Females
A female wild animal will do anything to protect her babies. If you pick up any of the babies and the mother sees you, she’ll assume you’re a predator and attack you immediately. Black bears are known to guard their babies jealously, and the raccoon is closely related to the bear. So, you want to avoid going too close to a mother raccoon or handling any of her babies. You should never handle a wild animal with bare hands, whether young or adult. In fact, just have it at the back of your mind that both young and adult wild animals are deadly – while adults will most likely bite or scratch your skin, the seemingly harmless babies will get you infected with deadly diseases.
